October Is Domestic Violence Awareness Month

National Domestic Violence Awareness Month is observed every October across the country. National, state, and community organizations for violence prevention and victim services, businesses, health care providers, and others mark the month with educational programs, recognition and memorial ceremonies, community outreach, and other efforts.

Any violence taking place within a family or intimate relationship is domestic violence. It includes abuse of spouses, girlfriends and boyfriends, children, and elderly people. Domestic violence cuts across all socioeconomic, ethnic, racial, religious, and age groups.

Studies show that children who witness violence at home experience behavioral problems and increased aggression, have less developed social and conflict resolution skills, and may suffer long-term developmental effects. These youth are also at risk of engaging in future violence and of being abused themselves. Researchers have found that people who batter their partners are also more likely to abuse their children.

Activities Planned for Robertson County include:

A Tree Planting on Saturday, October 16th at 6:00 p.m. at Travis Price Park. The tree will be planted close to the lake. Please make plans to join us. This is an excellent time to share information about our shelter and the programs we offer. If you would like information to distribute or on-site training provided, please contact Sandy Uhles at 382-0829.

Welcome to our New Children’s Advocate

My name is Thresea Adkins. I am the new Children’s Advocate of HomeSafe in Robertson County. I started working with HomeSafe on August 3, 2009.

While working with HomeSafe, I have learned a lot about Domestic Violence, and how it affects women and especially children. I plan to begin a support group for children of all ages. In this group, the children will be encouraged to express their feelings and concerns about domestic violence and its affect on their lives.

I have set several goals that I hope to accomplish with the children, including enhancing their self esteem, setting goals for their lives, and dealing with violence. All of the children who attend the support groups will be encouraged to talk freely about their fears.

The groups will begin meeting in the near future and will be divided by age. Activities will include artwork, games and one on one discussion time.

I look forward to working with the children in Robertson County and using my experience as a mother of five to help me relate to the children.

Thanks to Sandy and Sherry at HomeSafe for giving me this opportunity

Survivor Story

I met my brother’s friend at cook-out. He smiled at me and I smiled back. After introducing ourselves, he followed me and began a conversation. Well, we talked all afternoon. He shared about how badly he had been treated by his family and former girlfriends. I told him that I knew how he felt.

We started dating and within a few months, everything was great. We decided to move to another state and start a new life together. Everything was great. And then one day it all changed.

Nothing made him happy; he yelled at me and my children; he broke things in the house. After awhile, I left with my children, but he followed me to work, waited outside my job and watched me all the time. He would call and try to find out who was at the house and what I was doing. He promised to change if I came back. So I did.

This time it was worse than before. He took my car keys and kept my family and friends away. I lived this way for seven years and then I met someone from the Domestic Violence shelter. I learned about the Power and Control Wheel and learned that verbal abuse is considered Domestic Violence.

My life is great and I thank the people at the Domestic Violence Shelter for their support.

We would like to create a booklet of Survivor stories, poems, or art.
If you would like to submit an item for this booklet, please contact Sandy at 382-0829
